Even amputated limbs can be recycled. It’s behaviour change that is the biggest obstacle to a circular economy for healthcare, says Nepali engineer Mahesh Nakarmi. 

Hospitals mostly dispose of waste by burning it – the tried and trusted solution. But medical waste should be recycled, said Nepali engineer and social entrepreneur Mahesh Nakarmi, who has campaigned for hospitals in the South Asian country to repurpose everything from used syringes to sanitary pads and even amputated limbs since the late 1990s.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, major hospitals across Nepal have set up environmentally friendly systems to segregate, treat and dispose of healthcare waste. The results? Cleaner premises, safer working conditions, no more burning of waste and welcome revenue from the sale of recyclables.

When Shanti Budal walks through the tidy halls and wards of Seti Provincial Hospital, a 125-bed facility in Far Western Nepal, she is reminded of the transformation which she and her colleagues have helped to bring about. When she joined the staff as Nursing Administrator two years ago, the hospital looked very different.

In the category of Goal 3.9 – Reduction of Illness and Deaths from Hazardous Chemicals and Pollution, Mahesh Nakarmi, Chairperson of the Health Environment and Climate Action Foundation, was recognized for his significant contributions. Lastly, the award for Contribution to Health-Related Sustainable Development Goals as Female Community Health Volunteer was presented to Sharmila Lingden, a dedicated Female Community Health Volunteer from Sidingwa Rural Municipality in Taplejung.
